Hello!

I have been a proud resident of Burlington's Old North End (Chittenden 17 district)  for 14 years, and my wife, children, and I are intertwined with this vibrant community in many ways.

I am a small business owner and have run my architectural practice for 11 years with a mission to make design services affordable and accessible to homeowners and businesses. I work hard to provide guidance and consumer protection to my clients. Together, we navigate complex projects that improve their environments and make their dreams a reality.

Running for and holding a political office is a difficult task, but I am committed and persistent. As a woman and a working parent, I am no stranger to overcoming challenges. Astonishingly, fewer than 20 of Vermont’s 150 state representatives have children younger than 18, which means that the issues most important to Vermont’s working families – including my own – are not prioritized. The repercussions of this missing representation are far-reaching and long-lasting.

We need legislators who act with urgency and know that universal paid family leave, affordable housing, fair wages, workplace rights, climate change, and gun reform are a matter of survival. I will be that legislator.

About

I grew up on a small, second-generation farm in Western Massachusetts and learned from an early age how much physical work, ingenuity, and dedication is required to maintain a family farm. In 2000, I moved to Vermont to pursue a career in architecture. Vermont has been good to me – in 2012,  I married my wonderful wife, and in 2013, I became a parent and started my own business.

In starting my architectural practice, Hinge Inc., I relied on state safety net services to build my business from the ground up while raising my young family. A cornerstone of my business approach is to make design services approachable and affordable for everyone. This commitment to fostering inclusion and access is rooted in my experiences as a queer person, and as a woman in a male-dominated field. I know how important it is to be seen, heard, and valued, and I know what it takes to persist and thrive in spaces not designed for me.

I firmly believe the best solutions come from inviting everyone to the table and empowering my clients by valuing their input throughout the design process, and I see this political office as no different. I am also excited about the opportunity to bring my unique skill set into the State House, drawing on my experience to propose reasonable and practical solutions to the issues facing our community.

Emma Mulvaney-Stanak, Burlington Mayor

"I can think of no one better than Missa to ensure that we have a strong advocate for our neighbors’ needs in Montpelier. Missa is committed to equity, affordability, dignity, and safety for everyone and will listen and act upon constituents’ priorities in the State House.”

David Zuckerman, Lieutenant Governor of Vermont, former legislator, farmer

"Given that Missa grew up on a small family farm, I know she is aware of the hard work and the long-term dedication it takes to get things done. I also know that those of us who farm are connected to climate issues in deeply personal ways, given that our livelihoods and wellbeing hang in the balance, and our deep connection to and love of the land we steward. Additionally, the health of our local farms is directly tied to the health of our local communities. As our recent floods have shown us, this is an important moment to act on climate change urgently, and I trust that Missa will prioritize climate action that safeguards Vermont’s future for all residents."

Kelly Mangan, Author and Mom of 2, Ward 4

"Missa is brave in a way that few people are. When something is wrong, other people might nervously wring their hands, but she takes action. She is smart, compassionate, and has a strong sense of right and wrong. I trust her judgement, and I trust her to work hard to make sure she’s hearing and acting in our interests.”

Rachel Siegel, Former City Councilor, Ward 2

“There is a broad agreement about the problems we face as a City and State. It is clear to me that Missa is the candidate who will move State policies more boldly toward the solutions we need. She has lived experience receiving state support, she isn’t afraid to think outside the box, and she works actively across differences. These are all qualities I want in my representative.”

Mara Dowdall, Former Burlington Unitarian Minister, Ward 7

"I first met Missa eleven years ago, when she and her family attended the Burlington UU, where I was then minister. In the decade since, I have known her as a fellow parent on the school playground, Fletcher Free patron, small business owner, and friend. Missa is smart and kind, grounded and a good listener, pragmatic and committed to making all our lives better in all the ways she can. She gets through lived experience the key challenges and opportunities of our community, and will work creatively and collaboratively on our behalf. I am honored to support Missa to represent Chittenden-17 in the State House."

Keegan Albaugh, Executive Director of Dad Guild

"Our communities thrive when residents are engaged, actively listening to one another, and approaching every tension with curiosity and empathy. Missa is a community leader who regularly models these behaviors. I've known Missa through the parenting community for several years and have the utmost appreciation for her calming presence, respectful attitude and her ability to connect meaningfully with all of our community members. This community needs to be represented by a voice of the people. This community needs Missa."

Susan Cline Lucey, Owner of GROW Prenatal & Family Center, Ward 2 parent

"As a fellow small business owner, I appreciate that Missa would bring this important experience to her work to make Burlington more affordable. She is also a working parent of small children, which is a woefully underrepresented demographic in the Vermont House. I am excited that she would be an important voice for families in our community."

Melo Grant, Central District City Councilor

"I am excited to support Missa for Vermont’s House of Representatives. Burlington needs leaders like her who will work tirelessly and sensitively to address our community safety and substance use crises while honoring the perspectives and needs of diverse constituents. As a long time Old North End resident and local small business owner, Missa has seen firsthand the challenges we face, and I am confident that she will prioritize them in the Vermont House and will work to create a coalition of legislators who can help us and other parts of the state facing the same issues."

Vince Brennan, Former School Board & City Councilor, Ward 2 parent

"Missa has lived experience with many of the challenges that Burlington's working families are facing right now. She understands that a thriving local economy needs to be diverse and equitable and work for people of all backgrounds. She will prioritize the hard work to get us there. I am confident that her background and skills make Missa the House Rep we need at this moment, and I'm excited to support her."
